Why Do You Need To Wash Your Makeup Brushes Often?

Many women ignore the importance of washing makeup brushes often. Although they are quite a useful element in the beauty routine, there are those who overlook that little maintenance that allows them to be kept in optimal condition.

According to information published in the American Academy of Dermatology, dirty makeup brushes can wreak havoc on the skin. Therefore, their cleaning should be done between every 7 or 10 days, even if at first glance they seem to be clean.

Why is it necessary to wash your makeup brushes often?

Cleaning your makeup brushes regularly should be an important part of your beauty routine. Although it is easy to leave this task on the road,  there are many reasons why you should wash them often.

The American Academy of Dermatology also notes that these elements accumulate product residues, oils and dirt that, together, create an ideal environment for the growth of bacteria.

Therefore, we must follow the recommendations given for cleaning and disinfection, especially if we use them very frequently. Let’s see in detail other reasons to wash them frequently.

1. Prevents acne

Beauty tips for acne skin

Every time you use the makeup brushes, you are picking up everything that is on the face, that is, oil, dead skin cells, dust and anything else that sticks.

Without you knowing it, all of this facilitates the growth of bacteria that trigger or worsen acne. Also, when you use dirty brushes, you are rubbing this dirt all over your face, contributing to clogged pores.

2. Avoid germs

As we mentioned, dirty brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria. This is not only bad for your face, but also for your makeup products.

Transferring these bacteria to your products will contaminate them, affect and reduce the durability of the product.

3. Improve color application

Dirty makeup brushes are also ineffective at applying color accurately. With old makeup stuck in, you won’t be able to get the look you want.

Therefore, this is yet another reason for the importance of washing makeup brushes on a regular basis. Brushes will work much better if they are well cared for and in good condition.

4. Keeps brushes soft

If makeup brushes are not in good condition,  they become more abrasive and dry as they become caked with the product and debris from the face. In turn, this can irritate the skin. Cleaning your brushes regularly keeps them soft enough to avoid damaging your face.

Build-up on makeup brushes can cause fibers to break and bristles to weaken. This makes it even more difficult to apply makeup correctly.

5. Longer lasting brushes

When you clean your makeup brushes regularly,  you are preserving and extending their shelf life. Keep in mind that the more frequently you clean them, the longer they will last.

What should you use to clean your makeup brushes?

The best method of cleaning tools requires only water and dish soap or baby shampoo. The reason for this is that regular soap formulas can end up drying out the bristles of the brush, especially if they are made from natural hair.

To clean your makeup brushes, you need the following:

  • Dish soap or baby shampoo
  • A clean towel
  • A glass
  • A silicone pad

How do you clean your makeup brushes?

Follow these steps to properly clean makeup brushes:

  • First, wet the bristles with warm water.
  • Next, place a drop of soap or makeup brush cleanser in the palm of your hand.
  • Now, gently massage the tips of the bristles into the palm and rinse.
  • Afterward, squeeze out excess moisture with a clean towel.
  • Change the shape of the brush head.
  • To finish, let the brush dry with the bristles hanging over the edge of a counter, so that it dries properly.

Note: never let the brushes dry on a towel, as the bristles can get stained.

If you do this before bed, your brushes will be clean and dry in the morning. Nothing will do you better than the first application with soft makeup brushes.

  • In the middle of the wash, keep the base of the brush head away from soap and water. The bristles are glued to the base. Water and detergent can cause the glue to disintegrate, causing the bristles to loosen and peel off.
  • You also shouldn’t dry them vertically – this will cause water to seep into the splint, which will also loosen the glue and cause bristle loss.

In short, cleaning makeup brushes is important to be able to enjoy a perfect look and avoid skin imperfections. Now that you know the advantages of doing it, we encourage you to do it more regularly.
